Life for a parent whose child often becomes aggressive or violent when dysregulated is likely to be emotionally exhausting. Often deeply misunderstood by family, friends and even professionals, much well-meaning advice can lead to further dysregulation and to parents feeling shame and hopelessness. And, as nerves get ever more jangly, it becomes understandably harder for the parent to maintain their own calm during the storms, leading to entrenched patterns, further dysregulation and the whole family “walking on eggshells”.
